Tribute to freedom fighter Kalpana Datta on her birth anniversary. She was born this day, the 27th of July in 1913 in then Bengal province. Kalpana Datta completed her matriculation in 1929 in Chittagong and thereafter went to Calcutta for her higher studies. She joined Chhatri Sangha, a student organization that believed in the use of arms for driving the British out of the motherland. Chhatri Sangha was co-founded by 15-year-old Santi Ghosh; she, then aged 16 along with Suniti Choudhury, aged 15, assassinated British district magistrate Charles Geoffrey Buckland Stevens. Chhatri Sangha was closely associated with the Jugantar Party, a secret group that masterminded the assassination of many British officers. The episode of Santi Ghosh and Suniti Choudhury is described in Chapter 52 of #SaffronSwords (https://www.amazon.in/Saffron-Swords-Authors-Manoshi-Yogaditya/dp/B07Q139493). Kalpana Datta also joined the Indian Republican Army of Surya Sen (Master Da). She was part of the team of Surya Sen, who led the Chittagong armoury raid on 18 April 1930. The freedom fighters raided the Chittagong armoury of the British. They were successful in capturing the police armoury in Dampara, the Auxiliary Forces armoury, and the European club's headquarters in Pahartali. They also cut telephone and telegraph wires, thus disrupting train movements. Surya Sen hoisted the national flag outside the police armoury and declared formation of a Provisional Revolutionary Government. The British set to action and soon a battle followed between the British forces and the Indian Republican Army in Jallalabad Hills. It was April 22, 1930. A ceasefire was declared after the sun set. Soon after the British conducted raids and arrested many freedom fighters. Surya Sen was hanged on 12 January 1934; his teeth were hammered off and his nails were plucked out by the British so that he could not utter 'Vande Mataram' at the time of his hanging. Because many freedom fighters shouted ‘Vande Mataram’ when they were hanged. Kalpana Datta was arrested on 19 May 1933 and was sentenced to transportation for life. She was released after six years. And we are told we attained freedom ‘bina khadag bina dhaal’! Naman to all our freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. - Manoshi Sinha.
